The White House on 87thFor as long as I remember, I have lived here. Here is on 87th Avenue. Here is in the large, plain, white house set back from the street. A small, oval-like turn-around in front, with some brownish green grass inside the circle that it creates. On bright, clear summer days my brother and I would play catch in that small circle. Mom would sit on the front porch drinking ice cold water, while Dad mows the backyard. The White House on 87th by annebear1
The backyard has a play set, with three swings; a red swing for me, a blue one for my brother, and a yellow one that went unused. A small, square sand box sat next to the play set, but was soon overtaken by the wild animals. Together, they sat near the house, on top of the hill we have for a back yard. In winter, we would slide down it on our sleds for hours, only coming inside when we wanted some hot chocolate that Mom would make us.
NeighborhoodHere on 87th is such an open place. The only people I knew were Madge and Gill, the kind elderly couple that lived next door, but they moved away to be closer to their family. There are no box houses right on top of each other, barely having any yard surrounding them. There are no parks or sidewalks to play on. There is only a single strip of pavement, which our gravel driveway connects our home to, for a road. The quiet road that rarely gets traffic. The small cluster of trees near the edge of the backyard, that hides the old remains of a long-forgotten fence, is right next to the old tree that has the rotting tree house in it, separated from the rest of the yard by the stream that runs on the edge of the backyard. That small cluster of trees divides us from the people behind us. One family has a small dog, another has two Jack Russells and some horses, though I only see the pens and never the horses through the woods, and a third has some retrievers. Smile, laugh, run, and play,
Tag, you’re it, swing higher than you
Wash up, dinner time!
Race to the bathroom, hurry! I’m hungry!
Pray, eat, talk, clean up.
Hour until bedtime, play inside.
Yawn, climb into bed, goodnight
There’s so many wars we fought,
There’s so many things we’re not,
But with what we have,
I promise you that,
We’re marching on
Classes, outgoing, yet secluded
Try to play with everyone, someone
That game’s no fun now
Hot wheels cars and skirts
Boys won’t race cars with me
Don’t know how to be on the monkey bars with other girls
Stuck in the middle without a person to play with
For all of the plans we’ve made,
There isn’t a flag I’d wave,
Don’t care if we bend,
I’d sink us to swim,
We’re marching on
Homework, games, some time to play the piano
What’s going on? What’s the ‘cool’ game now?
I miss naps,
A GameThe goal is simple. Get the enemy’s flag to your side and touch it to your flag to win. Yellow against green, constantly after each other. Climb the tower, shout out “Capture the Flag” across the entire playground. Joining everyone as they line up, team captains face off in a two out of three round game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. The winner either picks the side they want or picks the first teammate. The loser gets the option the winner does not pick. Take turns picking teammates; I am always last, unless I’m a captain, but I do not let it hold me back from playing. Always enjoying the game, ignoring the fact of being picked last and somewhat left out during the game. Pick sides now, draw the line. The line that is the border between safety and enemy territory. The line is agreed upon, along with the other edges of each side’s territory. Keep the line intact as multiple pairs of shoes scuff and shuffle the wood chips around.
